Alternatives
The SNDR alternative to SendGrid.
A SendGrid alternative built for engineers — typed SDK, idempotent send, signed webhooks, per-MTA analytics, and pricing you can read without a sales call.
SendGrid is the incumbent for a reason — it scales to enormous volumes and integrates with everything. The trade-off is that the developer surface has grown thick over the years: v3 API, Mail Helper Class, dynamic templates, Marketing Campaigns, multiple SDKs in various states of maintenance. SNDR is built for teams that want one consistent typed API, a retry story they can audit, and pricing they can change tiers on without a quote. If you’re hitting the friction of SendGrid’s breadth without needing it, this page is for you.

SNDR vs SendGrid
Every row links to where the underlying behavior is documented or implemented.
| Feature | SNDR | SendGrid |
|---|---|---|
| API ergonomics | One typed SDK, one POST /v1/send, idempotent by default | Multiple SDKs + Mail Helper class + v3 REST |
| Free tier | 3,000 emails / month, no card required | 100 emails / day on trial |
| Pricing transparency | Three plans, full compare table, USD pricing | Multiple tiers + Marketing Campaigns add-ons + custom quotes |
| Webhook retries | 12 attempts, exponential backoff with jitter, replayable from admin | Event webhook with retries; replay via UI |
| Webhook signatures | HMAC-SHA256 over timestamp.body, replay-defended | ECDSA signatures |
| Idempotency | Header-driven, SDK auto-generates per call | X-Message-Id header for tracking |
| Per-MTA analytics | Built in | Aggregate, IP-pool level |
| Marketing tooling | Focused on transactional + broadcasts | Full Marketing Campaigns suite |
| Region | MENA-headquartered, Arabic-fluent support | US-based |

Why teams switch
Where SNDR fits better than SendGrid.
One API, not five
SendGrid grew organically — Mail Helper, dynamic templates, Marketing Campaigns, Email API, all with their own conventions. SNDR is one typed SDK. If you can call sndr.emails.send, you can use the rest.
Replayable webhooks
Every webhook delivery is recorded with response code, body, and headers. Click "replay" in the admin and the same payload re-fires against your endpoint — invaluable during an incident.
No surprise overages
Exceed your plan and sends pause until you upgrade or the billing cycle resets. We notify you first. SendGrid bills overage charges — sometimes thousands of dollars deep before anyone looks.
Operator-first analytics
Per-MTA delivery curves so you know if a single box is dragging your reputation. Per-recipient-domain inbox-rate so you know which ISP is having a bad day.
Predictable upgrades
Pro→Scale is pro-rated, charged against the saved card, no checkout interruption. SendGrid plan changes can require a sales touch above a certain volume.
MoR billing
Paddle owns VAT, sales tax, reverse-charge, dunning, and refunds for every customer’s jurisdiction. You get a clean USD line item; we get a clean invoice from Paddle.
Migration
Moving off SendGrid's SDK.
The SNDR SDK uses the same primitives as most modern email clients — install, instantiate with a key, call emails.send. In most codebases the migration is a focused diff.
- 1
Install the SDK
Add @rkiza/sndr alongside @sendgrid/mail. You can run them side by side during the cutover.
pnpm add @rkiza/sndr - 2
Replace the send call
SendGrid’s Mail Helper maps cleanly to the SNDR Send input. The single biggest delta: no setApiKey() global — the key lives on the client instance.
// before import sgMail from '@sendgrid/mail'; sgMail.setApiKey(process.env.SENDGRID_API_KEY!); await sgMail.send({ to: 'a@b.com', from: 'me@you.com', subject: 'hi', html: '<p>hi</p>' }); // after import { Sndr } from '@rkiza/sndr'; const sndr = new Sndr(process.env.SNDR_API_KEY!); await sndr.emails.send({ to: 'a@b.com', from: 'me@you.com', subject: 'hi', html: '<p>hi</p>' }); - 3
Migrate webhook handlers
SendGrid’s Event Webhook posts an array of events; SNDR posts one event per request with an HMAC signature. Verify with the helper, then switch your handler over.
import { verifyWebhookSignature } from '@rkiza/sndr'; app.post('/webhooks/sndr', express.raw({ type: 'application/json' }), (req, res) => { const ok = verifyWebhookSignature( req.body, req.header('x-sndr-signature') ?? '', process.env.SNDR_WEBHOOK_SECRET!, ); if (!ok) return res.status(400).send('bad signature'); const event = JSON.parse(req.body.toString('utf8')); // handle event.type: email.delivered | email.bounced | ... res.status(200).send('ok'); }); - 4
Re-add SPF/DKIM/DMARC
SNDR generates fresh DKIM keypairs per domain. SPF and DMARC records are reusable across providers — you can have both in the SPF "include:" list during cutover.
- 5
Turn down SendGrid traffic gradually
Roll a percentage of sends to SNDR via a feature flag. Watch the per-recipient-domain inbox rate climb in the dashboard. Cut over completely when the curves match (usually within a week).

No shade — SendGrid is a great product. SNDR just optimises for different things.
